Why It's Critical For Everyday Life

 (Episode 20)

On The Place We Find Ourselves Podcast, Adam Young offers incredible psychoeducation on affect regulation. A human being’s emotional mood state shows up in their body. The body is not simply a conveyor of physical pain and pleasure, but of emotional states of pain and pleasure as well. These emotional states show up as physical sensations in the body. Through a clear, practical approach, Young uses a scale of 1-10 to explain the internal bodily sensations that show up as different mood states. Young explains that the discomfort of being out of balance is so great that people will do anything to get their internal system back into balance, ie. rage, numb out, panic, drown in depression, etc. Without an awareness of what our bodily sensations mean, we are at the mercy of an array of addictions and our relationships will suffer. We need to foster the ability to tune in to our affect, and find healthy ways to regulate. An understanding of how to regulate our affect is actually vital for repairing relationships, recovering from addictions, and living in a functional, life-giving manner.
